Integers

Vocabulary

Integer-Any positive or negative number

Opposite-The different of something

How to solve integers(addition)

If the signs are the same add and keep the same sign in your sum.

If the signs are the opposite then subtract and keep the sign of the bigger number on the sum.

Ex:
-3+4=1

3+4=7

How to solve integers(subtraction)

First, change the subtraction sign to addition.

Then, change the number after the subtraction sign to its opposite

Ex:

7-5=2 Now you're probably wondering how i got that. First I changed the subtraction to addition, like this 7+5. Then, I changed the number after the subtraction sign to its opposite -5.
That is how i got 2 as my difference.

How to solve integers(multiplication and division)

If the signs are the same it will be positive.

If the signs are different then it will be negative.

6x8=48

-6x8=-48

Real life situation

Say you're in debt if you have $500, but you owe $700, then you will not be able pay $200.
Think of $500 of a positive number, and think as $200 as a negative number.

How to solve algebraic equations

First, here are the three steps of solving equations.

1. Ask yourself what is being done to the variable(addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)?

2. Then you do the inverse operation to both sides of the equation( whatever you do to one side you must do to the other).

3. Finally the variable you got from doing inverse operations should equal the variable.

Ex: 5+x=19
-5 -5
x=14

How to check equations

1. First you rewrite the equation. 5+x=19

2. Then, you plug in the variable. 5+14=19

3. Thirdly, you should do all the operations. 5+14=19
19 = 19
4. Lastly, you should get what the variable equals x=14

Vocabulary

Equation- two numbers that have the same value

Variable-a letter that represents a number

Inverse operations-an operation that is the opposite of
what is being done to the variable. So, if it is addition then you do subtraction, and if it is multiplication then you divide.

Factors and GCF

A factor is a number that is multiplied by another product to get a product. Let's say you have 24 and 48 as your numbers. First you find the factors of the numbers. So, the factors of 24 are, 1, 24, 2, 12, 3, 8, 4, 6. And the factors for 48 are, 1, 48, 2, 24, 3, 16, 4, 12, 6,8. The GCF (greatest common factor) would be 12, because 12 is the highest multiple in the list of 24 and 48.

Here is a way to apply factors to a fraction.
9/12 = 3/4
3/4 because if you make a factor list 9 and 16. The GCF would be 3.
9 divided by 3 is 3 and 12 divided 3 is 4.
So, it would be 3/4

Exponents and scientific notation

First let's say you have 4 as the base and 3 as the exponent. 4 to the third power just means 4x4x4. So you do 4x4 which is 16. Then you have one more four so you multiply 16x4, which is 64.
